LOCAL ROUNDUP: Illinois State Horseshoe Tourney comes to Danville (2024)

DANVILLE — The Danville Horseshoe Club will host the 2024 Illinois State Horseshoe Tournament at Douglas Park all this weekend.

The tournament will start on Friday at 6 p.m. with the doubles event with the singles competitions starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Championship Classes start pitching at 2 p.m. on Saturday and finals starting at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

There will be 101 pitchers in action vying for top sports in 15 classes. Defending men's champion Austin Bailey of Springfield and Elder's Champion Ken Schaver of Morrison are ack and new champions will be crowned in the Women's, Junior Boys, Junior Girls and Cadets.

Spectators are welcome and no admission will be charged. Concessions are available at courtside.

Danville second at home

DANVILLE — The Vikings ended up second to Rantoul/PBL in a meet with Westville at Turtle Run Golf Course.

Cale Osborn had a 43 to lead Danville, while Brody Boyd had a 45, Gavin Fauver had a 55 and Tate McLaughlin added a 56.

Ben Johnson had a 47 for the Tigers, while Kiptyn Appl had a 48 and Austin Shannon and Gavin Long each had a 56.

ROSSVILLE — The Hoopeston Area boys golf team settled for second to Rantoul/Paxton-Buckley-Loda in a meet with Fisher and Westville at Hubbard Trail Country Club on Monday.

Cy Tuggle had a 41 for the Cornjerkers, while Trent Montez had a 48 and Felix Cantu and Owen Field each had a 50.

Gavin Long had a 51 to lead the Tigers, who finished fourth, while Kiptyn Appl had a 55, Alek Van Dorn had a 61 and Andrew Perkins added 62.

Covington second at Rockville

ROCKVILLE, Ind. — The Covington girls golf team had to take second in a meet on Monday, falling by only two shots to host Parke Heritage.

Sydni Crain had a personal best 37 to win medalist honors for the Trojans, while Aliyah Dean had a 54, Lydia Bennett had a 58 and Kendall Shumaker added a 63.

Fountain Central did not have a team score as Bella Bacon had a 51, Rya Jackson carded a 52 and Autumn Payne added a 57.

Seeger third at West Lafayette

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Seeger girls golf team ended up third in a meet with West Lafayette and McCutcheon.

Callie Anderson had a 57 to lead the Patriots, while Jewel Perry had a 59 and Megan Such and Emma Nern each had a 66.

SF/Oakwood 5, St. Joe-Ogden 1

ST. JOSEPH — The Salt Fork/Oakwood boys soccer team jumped up to a big lead and held on for a 5-1 win over St. Joseph-Ogden in the team's opener on Monday.

Ethan Merritt had three goals and an assist for the Storm, who was up 3-0 at halftime, while Macen Phillips had a goal and three assists, Trevor McCall had a goal and Jakob Rupp had eight saves.

PREP BOYS TENNIS

Fountain Central 5, Southmont 0

VEEDERSBURG, Ind. — The Fountain Central boys tennis team made quick work of Southmont 5-0 in a home matchup on Monday.

Gabe McCollum, Skyler Hoagland and Ayden Batchelor each won singles matches for the Mustangs, while the doubles teams of Levi McTagertt and Levi Miller and William Armstrong and Jose Duarte-Grajales also win.

The Mustangs are 2-1.

Devyn Gose won in singles for Schlarman Academy, while the team of Evy Kelsey and Regan Troglia won in doubles.

WESTVILLE — The Westville volleyball team won their season opener with an easy 25-11, 25-3 win over Rantoul on Tuesday.

Madelyn Doggett had 10 kills, two assists, four digs and two aces for the Tigers, while Ella Miller had 11 kills, Lainey Wichtowski had 22 assists, Maddie Appl had three blocks and Daylin Zaayer had a 15-point service run in the second set.

Westville will face Tri-County today.

PAXTON — The Hoopeston Area volleyball team hit the road again on Tuesday and lost a 25-23, 25-17 match to Paxton-Buckley-Loda.

Addy Kelnhofer had five kills and Brylie Cox had four kills for the Cornjerkers, who will face Attica in their first home match today.

Unity 2, BHRA 1

TOLONO — The Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin volleyball team had a tough start to the season on Monday, losing 23-25, 25-19, 25-19 to Unity.

Reis McFarland had eight kills for the Blue Devils, while Macy Danner had 12 digs, Mallory Brines had eight assists and a ace and Ava Acton had two blocks.

The Blue Devils will try to regroup today, when they will travel to St. Joseph-Ogden.

WEST LEBANON, Ind. — The Seeger volleyball team were able to pick up its first win of the season on Tuesday with a 25-2, 25-10, 25-22 win over Fountain Central,

Chase Lemming had 20 kills with six digs for the Patriots, while Marissa Rickey had 12 assists, Emilee Neubauer had 10 assists, Lyla Badger had nine assists ad Aubry Herbert had 11 digs.

Seeger is 1-5 overall and 1-1 in the Wabash River Conference and will face Crawfordsville today. Fountain Central will host Schlarman today.

Covington 3, West Vigo 0

COVINGTON, Ind. — The Covington volleyball team continued its undefeated start with a 25-9, 25-12, 25-12 win over West Vigo.

Alex Sutherlin had nine kills, 10 digs and five aces for the Trojans, while Ashlyn Alexander had three kills, seven digs and three aces, Katie Drollinger had four kills and two blocks and Peyton Brown had 13 digs and 21 assists.

The Trojans are 4-0 and will travel to Southmont today.
